Red-Bellied Woodpecker

I've put out two feeders, of which one has suet cakes attached to it for the woodpeckers that occasionally came to the feeders last winter.

So what do you do when a woodpecker shows up and disregards those lovely suet cakes (apples and walnuts!) and goes to the finch feeder? Well, you take pictures and try not to laugh (even if you do just a little) at the birdy contortions on the feeder.

Oh - I am so jealous!! We rarely see woodpeckers here - although we sometimes hear them when we are out for a walk. We have had one on the bird feeder on a few occasions, but the moment you walk into the room, it must be aware of the movement and flies away ....
Thanks for the info on the kaleidoscope effect!

ps, the word verification is 'nestin', which seems appropriate!!

Such a stylish little bird! We can hear one down at the allotment sometimes, but we never manage to see it.

Wonderful photographs.

Karen, I really love all your birds photographs, they look like so comfortable, they don't know you're here! Awesome photography :-)

Anne: I'm lucky in that I can stand by the sliding glass doors in the dining room and take these pictures. With the lights off, it makes the perfect bird blind.

Rachel: I hear them also in the wooded area back behind the townhomes. I've never had a red-bellied woodpecker at the feeder, so what a treat.

Anyes: Thanks to a super zoom camera, the pictures are so much clearer than what I took last year with a point and shoot.
